Google is testing a new AI tool, Ask for Me, which calls businesses on behalf of users to gather information and schedule appointments. Currently, the feature supports finding nail salons and auto repair shops that match a user’s criteria.
How Ask for Me Works
Users can enable the experimental feature in Google Search Labs. Once activated, an Ask for Me footnote appears in search results for local nail salons or auto repair shops. Selecting it prompts Google to ask a series of questions, such as the make and model of a car, the type of service needed (e.g., oil change or tire replacement), and the preferred appointment time. Users must also provide their email or phone number to receive updates, adds NIX Solutions.
AI-Powered Calls and Business Interaction
According to Google’s head of product Rose Yao, Ask for Me is powered by Duplex, an AI system that mimics a human voice to call businesses and make reservations. Google spokesperson Craig Ewer told The Verge that every call starts with a message identifying it as an automated Google system. Businesses can opt out of these calls through their Google Business Profile settings or by informing the AI bot directly.
To prevent excessive automated calls, Google has implemented a call quota system. Additionally, the AI may use collected data to assist other users with similar requests. The feature is still in testing, yet we’ll keep you updated as more integrations become available.
