In the latest iOS 18.2 beta release, Apple has enhanced its Find My app, introducing a new “Share Item Location” feature that allows users to share a link to the location of a lost AirTag or other device connected to the Locator Network. This update, detailed in an Apple press release, is part of Apple’s effort to simplify tracking for lost items. Additionally, Apple announced a new partnership with over 15 international airlines to support this feature, improving the chances of recovering misplaced or lost luggage.
Sharing Links for Lost Items
The Share Item Location feature enables users to generate a link for a lost AirTag or device within the Find My app. This link can then be shared with another person, allowing them to assist in locating the lost item. When someone receives the link, they can open a special web page that displays the item’s last known location on an interactive map. The page will automatically refresh if the location changes, with timestamps providing context to track updates accurately. Apple has emphasized that this information is accessible in real-time, which can significantly increase the chances of finding lost items quickly.
Airline Partnerships for Lost Luggage Recovery
To further expand the usability of the Share Item Location feature, Apple has partnered with more than 15 global airlines. This partnership aims to support item tracking within the airline industry, especially to aid in locating lost luggage. Partnered airlines, such as British Airways, Lufthansa, Delta Air Lines, and Singapore Airlines, will be able to receive location information from users’ shared links securely. Apple has designed the system to ensure privacy, stating that airlines will only have restricted access to item locations.
Apple has also announced that only a limited number of individuals can access each shared link, and recipients will need to authenticate their access using their Apple account or a verified email address with the partner airline. The system aims to protect user privacy while enhancing the chances of locating lost belongings.
