NIX Solutions: Ultra HDR Now in Google Photos

In the latest test version of Google Photos, a new feature has started to appear for some users — the ability to convert images to Ultra HDR format. Early testers have shared comparisons showing how this feature changes the look of photos.

The update enabling this feature is server-side, meaning it can appear in the Google Photos app without requiring a manual update via Google Play. The Ultra HDR option is designed to expand the dynamic range of images and enhance color saturation, offering more vivid and visually striking results.

Interestingly, conversion to Ultra HDR can be performed even on smartphones without an HDR-compatible screen. However, in such cases, the difference in image quality will be less noticeable during viewing.

New Location in the Built-In Photo Editor

The Ultra HDR feature can be found in the built-in photo editor. After the update, it replaces the “HDR effect” button and can be accessed through the following path: “Edit/Customize”. Once applied, the converted image receives a small visual mark indicating that the effect has been used.

According to screenshots shared by early users, the file size of the converted image also becomes slightly smaller after applying the Ultra HDR effect. This might be related to how the visual data is being processed and saved.

At this point, there is no official word on when the feature will roll out globally, notes NIX Solutions. It may take some time before all users receive access, especially since its appearance depends on server-side changes and not standard app updates. Yet we’ll keep you updated as more integrations become available and the function becomes more widely accessible.

If you’re eager to try Ultra HDR and haven’t seen the feature yet, make sure your app is up to date and check back periodically. As with many of Google’s experimental features, a wider rollout may follow soon based on initial feedback and testing results.
