Meta has officially launched a dedicated WhatsApp app for iPad, over 15 years after the messaging service and Apple’s tablet made their respective debuts in 2009 and 2010. The app is now available for download in the App Store and includes most of the features available on the iPhone version.
Previously, iPad users who wanted to access WhatsApp had to rely on the web version through a browser or use the desktop applications for Mac or PC. This workaround lacked the native experience many had hoped for. Back in 2022, WhatsApp CEO Will Cathcart had hinted that an iPad app was in development. He encouraged users to “not give up hope,” adding that Meta would “love to” build a version for iPadOS due to high demand over the years.
Multitasking, Calls, and More on iPad
The new iPad app integrates well with the multitasking features of iPadOS, including Stage Manager, Split View, and Slide Over. This means users can now read or reply to messages while using other apps side by side—such as browsing the web or watching a video—without the need to constantly switch between screens.
In addition to messaging, the app supports voice and video calls with up to 32 participants. Users can make calls using both the front and rear cameras of their device, and even share their screens during video conferences. This makes it more convenient for both personal and professional communication on a larger display.
There is currently no information about whether the iPad app will receive features exclusive to the tablet, but the current version brings the expected core functionality with a more comfortable layout for larger screens, notes NIX Solutions.
Meanwhile, there are ongoing rumors that Meta is also developing an iPad-optimized version of Instagram. While this has not yet been confirmed, it suggests that the company may continue to expand its offerings for iPadOS users. We’ll keep you updated as more integrations become available.
