Google has rolled out simultaneous updates to its navigation apps, Maps and Waze, introducing a range of new features. The company continues to integrate Waze tools into Maps while enhancing both apps’ capabilities.
New Features in Google Maps
Google Maps now boasts improved traffic incident reporting, with larger icons for road closures, construction, speed cameras, and police presence. A notable addition is the building entrance finder tool, which identifies the required building and highlights its main entrance in green as users approach. Nearby parking information will also be displayed.
The enhanced traffic incident reporting system is already available on Google Maps for Android, iOS, cars with built-in Google, Android Auto, and Apple CarPlay. The destination assistance feature will be accessible “in the coming weeks.” We’ll keep you updated on any further developments regarding these features.
Waze Enhancements and User Engagement
Waze has received significant updates as well. Users can now report new types of traffic cameras that monitor driving in dedicated lanes, texting while driving, and seat belt violations. A new dedicated interface has been introduced to provide information about local events affecting traffic, such as marathons, bike rides, concerts, and other mass gatherings.
Users will receive push notifications when roads near their office, home, or recently visited locations are closed. The launch of this new tool coincides with the start of the 2024 Olympic Games.
Despite the similarities between Waze and Google Maps, company managers deny plans for full integration, notes NIX Solutions. Google Maps CEO Can Comertoglu emphasized the dedication of Waze users to their platform. Waze CEO Tim Queenan reported that Waze now has more than 500,000 active participants.
These updates demonstrate Google’s commitment to improving navigation experiences across both platforms, catering to different user preferences and needs. As the company continues to refine its navigation offerings, users can expect further enhancements and features in the future. We’ll keep you updated on any new developments in this space.
