iPhone users can now set WhatsApp as their default app for making calls and sending messages, The Verge reports. Initially, Apple introduced this feature only for users in the European Union, but later expanded support to all iPhone owners with iOS 18.2 and above.
Once set as the default, WhatsApp will automatically open when clicking on a phone number on a web page or selecting the message button in contacts. This update aims to streamline communication for those who rely on WhatsApp daily.
WhatsApp’s Ongoing Improvement
WhatsApp developers have been working toward this for some time. Earlier this year, they introduced a feature allowing users to manually enter numbers directly in the calls section. Additionally, it became possible to check if a number is registered with WhatsApp or belongs to a verified business account, notes NIXSOLUTIONS.
To set WhatsApp as the default app, users need to go to “Settings,” then “Applications,” and select “Default Apps.” In the “Messages” and “Calls” sections, a list of available alternatives will appear, now including WhatsApp. According to WABetaInfo, the setup process is intuitive and takes just a few seconds.
Feature Rollout and Availability
Currently, the ability to select WhatsApp as the default app is available to users with the latest beta version via TestFlight. In the coming days, the feature will roll out to more users. We’ll keep you updated as the availability expands further.
